THE BEST OF THE BESS
THE GERSHWIN'S PORGY AND BESS
American Repertory Theater
Beginning August 17
Returning to its Boston-area roots after 76 years, The Gershwins’ Porgy And Bess—a new
take on a classic of the American theater—makes its debut at the American Repertory Theater
on August 17. This operatic masterpiece premiered in 1935 at Boston’s Colonial Theatre, and
now returns in a re-imagined production directed by A.R.T. Artistic Director (and Tony Award
nominee) Diane Paulus. Set in the poverty-stricken South Carolina neighborhood of Catfish
Row, Porgy and Bess is the story of beautiful, troubled Bess (Audra McDonald of “Private
Practice”, pictured), who seeks protection in the arms of a crippled beggar Porgy (Norm Lewis)
after her old lover, Crown, commits a murder. The tension grows as the burgeoning love affair is
threatened by Crown and the devious Sporting Life (David Alan Grier). The show is packed with
legendary Gershwin tunes like “Summertime” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” and is a must-see
for any true theater fan.
