Mamma Maria
3 North Sq. 617-523-0077
Christopher Wallenberg

Sitting in a typically tiny, family-run restaurant in the North End definitely has its charms. Home-cooked, authentic Italian cuisine and friendly service are, after all, hallmarks of the neighborhood’s dining scene. But for those with higher expectations, there’s Mamma Maria in historic North Square.

At Mamma Maria, you’ll not only get expertly prepared dishes served by a knowledgeable staff, you’ll also experience what is perhaps the pinnacle of fine dining in the North End. Starting with the setting—a 19th century brick row house impeccably furnished in Colonial decor and filled with tables elegantly draped in white—it’s easy to see that no detail is left to chance. Those seated in one of the cozy second story dining rooms can look down upon a gorgeous view of the cobblestoned square, site of the Paul Revere House, Boston’s oldest standing residence.

The menu changes with the seasons to highlight the best in local produce. Appetizers can range from fresh Maine scallops, pan-roasted and succulent, to Italian specialities such as tender grilled octopus and the flavorful, thinly sliced beef of the carpaccio. Pasta, a staple of any Italian menu, comes in a dazzling variety of shapes and sizes. Lobster practically bursts from giant, ravioli-like tortelli in one entree. Another boasts succulent chunks of rabbit complemented by hand-rolled ribbons of pappardelle topped with a savory, gravy-like sauce. Meat and fish are also a specialty, from wild striped bass to lamb. An impressive wine list full of excellent vintages both domestic and Italian is available to help round out your meal.

The desserts are seasonal as well, as evidenced by the many blueberry confections on the late summer menu, including an icy, refreshing blueberry gelato surrounded by a sea of plump, native berries. Conclude your meal with an espresso or cappuccino as you watch the sun fade and the twinkling lights of downtown come alive. Mamma Maria is one North End establishment that certainly goes the extra mile to ensure that diners go home satisfied.
