Spirit of Boston
Spirit of Boston World Trade Center (617) 748-1450 Upon boarding the ship, one realizes its tremendous size. The Spirit of Boston is home to three floors of dining, four outside deck areas adorning the front and back of the boat as well as the entire top deck, two dance floors and two bandstands. Stepping on board was an adventure in itself. After being seated next to a window, it was easy to relax in the comfortable atmosphere produced by the light jazz music drifting throughout the room. We were immediately served a refreshing Ecco-Domani Merlot and a bright blue margarita, the night’s special, along with a luscious green salad lightly bathed in Italian dressing. As we enjoyed our appetizers, Tom Donlan, the ship’s captain, steered the vessel out to the Harbor. Just as our salads were nearing completion and our palates were whet for the upcoming entrees, the entertainment arrived. Singing “The Spirit Family,” a take-off of Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family,” six performers danced and sang as they ran through the restaurant aisles to the dance floor. It was showtime. Performing such numbers as “Respect,” “Rock This Town” and “Celebrate” to name a few, the energetic bunch enthralled the audience as onlookers made their ways to the buffet style dinner, filled their plates and sat down to eat. As with any buffet, there was a large array of food ranging from pasta to roast beef; hence our plates were stacked high with a bit of everything. Arriving back at our table, we were quickly reassured that we had not overindulged as every bit was delicious. I began with the garlic mashed potatoes, whipped to perfection, along with a perfectly-cooked, juicy and flavorful chicken marsala. I then enjoyed the thai peanut pasta and green string beans on the side. My partner-in-crime devoured the roast beef, and quickly returned for seconds. After filling our stomachs, we retreated to the upper deck to enjoy the view and do a little sightseeing. With a picture-perfect sunset outlining the Boston skyline, a soft breeze blowing across the deck and the sound of waterlapping against the side of the boat, the scene was ideal. Besides the unforgettable sunset, other sights included Bunker Hill Monument, the Mystic Tobin Bridge, “Old Ironsides” and the site of the Boston Massacre. Captain Donlan was also eager to share a few learned stories about secret undersea tunnels leading from one island to another and other such tidbits. After enjoying the sights, we went back in to join the dancing and were met with dessert waiting for us at our table. Two small pastries, the delectable apple morsel and the delicious chocolate pastry filled with whipped cream, did not last long on our plates. When dessert was finished we sat back, relaxed and listened to the Castaways, the band on board for the evening, play music ranging from the 60s to the 90s and watched while everyone danced the night away. Stepping out on the deck for one last view before docking, I was met with the Boston city skyline lit up against a background of stars. A perfect end to a fantastic evening. |
