New Nibbles on Newbury
Hotel Chocolat
141A Newbury St.
617-391-0513
Browsing the glamorous boutiques on Newbury
Street can tire out even the most dedicated shopaholic, but a fabulous new arrival
to the street is providing fashionistas with a seriously upscale sugar boost. Famed
UK chocolatier Hotel Chocolat recently made Boston the site of its first-ever U.S.
shop, bringing its imaginative take on traditional chocolate treats and dedication
to quality ingredients across the pond. The Boston location boasts a chocolate tasting
room and a seemingly endless supply of gourmet goodies, including truffles, liquid
chocolate and dark chocolate infused with chili, all of which ensure that Hub chocoholics
will want to check in and stay awhile.

Boston Ted Party
Ted Baker
201 Newbury St.
617-450-8339
London’s
famed clothing guru Ted Baker (nee Ray Kelvin, pictured) has opened his first New
England store on Newbury Street, and it’s made the sort of splash one would
expect from one of Europe’s most popular designers. In obvious tribute to
the Hub’s long history with British tea (we don’t dump the stuff in
the harbor anymore, promise!), the new store’s bold interior is decorated
in the spirit of the Mad Hatter’s tea party, complete with white marble checkerboard
floor, glass top hats serving as ceiling lights, ceramic tea pots scattered throughout
the store and a cashier’s counter artfully constructed out of stacked tea
cups. It’s a stunning and creative environment in which to sell the equally
creative Ted Baker Autumn 2009 collections for men and women, characterized by the
designer’s trademark flair for hidden design details—be it a flashy
and bold lining in each men’s blazer, funky patterns in each pair of men’s
socks or even a hidden image of Marilyn Monroe somewhere in a garment, unexpected
delights abound in these stylish and sophisticated fashions.

Benny and the Threads
Ben Sherman
154 Newbury St.
617-236-1165
From
the original mods and rockers of the swinging ’60s to the punks of the 1970s
to modern-day Britpop stars like Oasis and Arctic Monkeys, no designer has been
adopted by the musical icons of their respective generations like British clothier
Ben Sherman. Now, Bostonians can say “cheerio” to their drab wardrobe
and opt instead for gear with distinctly “cool Britannia” pizzazz as
this Carnaby Street pioneer opens his first Boston store. The shop offers cool threads
for men and women, everything from rocker tees and skinny jeans to vibrant Oxford
button-downs and tailored jackets, all epitomizing British fashion and flair. So
for anyone ready to stylistically cross the pond, swing by Mr. Sherman’s—no
passport required!

Yuletide Yummies
Hotel Chocolat
141A Newbury St.
617-391-0513
Before you get too excited, it’s
not really a hotel made out of chocolate—but with all the delicious and decadent
treats available at this inaugural U.S. outpost of the famed UK gourmet chocolatier,
you may find yourself wanting to check in and stay awhile. The Newbury Street locale
is the perfect stop for a treat after a long day of sightseeing or to find the perfect
holiday sweet to send to your sweetheart. This holiday season, Hotel Chocolat is
spreading cheer with gift items like the “Rather Large Christmas Cracker”
(pictured)—a larger-than-life version of the traditional British holiday favor
filled with paper hats, jokes and, of course, chocolates—as well as an upscale
take on the familiar advent calendar, packed with truffles and dark chocolates to
help you count down to Santa’s arrival.

Fashion Meets Fandom
Lucy’s League
Faneuil Hall Marketplace
North Market Building, 1st Floor
617-248-3986
In the sports-mad Hub, Boston gals show off their spirit for our local teams as
much as their male counterparts—but that doesn’t mean they want to dress
like the boys, too. Luckily, there’s now Lucy’s League, a new boutique
at Faneuil Hall Marketplace that moves beyond pink hats and jerseys and gives fashion-conscious
sports fans a chance to look stylish at sporting events, or anywhere. A first for
Boston, the store stocks designer brands like Nike, Banner 47 and celebrity Alyssa
Milano’s Touch line, which celebrate female fans’ favorite teams with
apparel and accessories fit for the gym, the stadium and even the nightclub.

A Family Affair
Galleria Florentia
79 Newbury St.
617-585-9200
Because of the specialized skills involved in crafting home furnishings, one frequently
finds furniture design and sales to be family businesses, handed down from generation
to generation. That’s certainly the case at Newbury Street’s newest
home of European fine arts and furnishing, Galleria Florentia. Packed with museum-quality
artwork and gorgeous furniture from legendary European designers and crafters like
the Marconis of Italy’s Lombardo region (inlay furnishings), the Rotellinis
of Florence (leather-bound books and frames), the Delucas of Naples (bronze sculpture)
and many more, Galleria Florentia specializes in high-end pieces of uncommon beauty
and elegance for homes and businesses, while its boutique boasts ideal gifts—like
hand-carved chess sets and photo albums—for truly special occasions.

Movin’ On Down
Sassoon Salon
399 Boylston St.
617-536-5496
While
most of us wouldn’t mind a bit of penthouse, pie-in-the-sky living, one of
Boston’s top shops for choice coiffures is takin’ it to the streets—street-level,
that is. The legendary Sassoon Salon celebrates its 20th anniversary with a move
to a brand-new location—a bigger, better ground-level space in the heart of
Back Bay. Already one of the most illustrious salons in the city, Sassoon’s
sleek and minimalist, yet warm and welcoming, new space fills its 3,000 square feet
with 26 hair stations, an open color bar and a certified organic product line. The
space may be new, but the standards that have made this styling stalwart a cut above
for two decades remain the same.
